Help restore a piece of our history
St. Jude’s has always been a place for caring. Starting out as a grand family home, it was built in 1914 for the family of Rev. Havelock and Agnes Coates. Working for years as missionaries in Asia, the Coates were a generous clan that doted on their giant Japanese Mastiff dog and had many happy years in their home here at 27th and Willow.

The original Craftsman-Style stained-glass window from the Northeast corner of the second floor with its iconic coconut trees.
By 1948, the family had moved on, and the house was acquired by an Anglican charity as a home to support elderly ladies of limited means. Throughout the years, more land was acquired and the house renovated often, in order to best serve the increasingly diverse group of people who called it home.
Despite all changes however, the designs have always maintained a nod to the original grandness of the house that started it all…
One of the most unique features remaining at St. Jude’s is a Craftsman-Style stained-glass window, featuring two coconut trees, which sits on the Northeast corner of the second floor.
We are proud that careful stewardship for almost 80 years has allowed us to maintain and update our aging building, while preserving its’ original charm and character. In addition to our stained-glass, we have several original windows in our old house.
That said, time can take a toll on structures while they protect us from the elements and keep us safe. The rooms with original windows are drafty in the winter and warm in the summer. They need to be replaced.
As a result, we are preparing to install 10 new, vintage style windows and repair the Northeast corner of the house façade. This includes the spot where the tropical stained-glass window resides.
As a not-for-profit VCH affiliate long-term care home, St. Jude’s receives no government funding for capital projects and maintenance. To keep our home safe and comfortable, we must fund these repairs ourselves, drawing exclusively on our own resources to pay for the work. Fundraising is the primary way we will fund this project.
Will You Sponsor a Coconut?
We need the help of our community. Taking inspiration from the stained-glass window, we are asking donors to sponsor a coconut to help us meet our $120,000 goal.
Donation amounts are completely optional – give what you can. Every bit helps and any donation of $25 or more will receive a tax receipt. Remember to mention the coconut campaign!
Thank you from your support!
