VISITOR POLICY

The involvement of family and friends in the life of our residents is a fundamental aspect to their quality of life.
Visiting is highly encouraged.

Visiting Hours

It is important that St. Jude’s feels like home and for that reason, there are no formal visiting hours at St. Jude’s – family is always welcome.

Please be mindful of the daily schedule of the resident you are visiting as well as that of other residents. For example, some residents sleep in, and each resident has an assigned bathing time. If you’re a friend and not sure when the best time is to visit, speak to the family or the nurse.

**If you have symptoms of a respiratory or GI illness, such as a cold, flu, nausea or diarrhoea etc, please postpone your visit.

Sign-In

For safety reasons, all visitors are required to sign-in and out when visiting. You’ll see the visitor sign-in form when you enter via the locked front doors. Ring the door bell if you do not know the code to enter.

Please review the list of respiratory illness symptoms. Verify you do not have any on the sign-in form.

Although masks are currently no longer required to be worn in long-term care homes, this policy is subject to change. The whiteboard in the foyer will list the current requirements.

Masks and hand sanitizer are always available for your convenience.

Washrooms

There are 3 visitor washrooms at St. Jude’s:

  • On the main floor, near room 120 by the dining room.
  • On SCU a shared Resident/Visitor washroom off the dining room by the Kitchenette.
  • In the Basement, beside the Hair Salona and across from the Elevator.

Live Music and Other Events

To keep up with activities happening at St. Jude’s. please check our recreational calendar (available in each dining room and in the front foyer).

We also frequently have events like special meals, available for sign up at the reception desk.

Taking a Resident Outside

As part of the admission package, POAs are asked to identify who is allowed to remove residents from St. Jude’s. For security reasons, only those listed on the ‘Remove from Resident’ form can take residents outside the building. All visitors can take a resident to one of our two secured patios to enjoy time outside.

In addition to our secured outdoor spaces, approved visitors can enjoy time in our east side Gazebo, one of our benches facing the park or our heated lower patio.

St. Jude’s is across from Braemar Park and a short walk to King Edward Shopping center where there is a Safeway, Starbucks, Lifelabs and several restaurants.

Meals

In addition to the 3 meals and snacks provided each day, families are encouraged to bring in food or take residents out for meals, especially cultural and family favourites.

Please ensure that the foods provided are of a safe consistency for your loved one.

Food that is left for a Resident must be labeled with the Resident’s name and the date and placed in the Resident refrigerators. For safety reasons, food will only be kept for 24 hours before disposal

Family or friends are welcome to join a resident for a meal at St. Jude’s. The weekly menu is posted on the wall on each floor. Please contact reception by 10 am for lunch and 3 pm for dinner or sign up on the sheet provided on the hallway entrance to the kitchen (just ask a staff member the first time!).

For larger groups (4+ guests), please plan further in advance and contact reception to discuss whether your group can be accommodated. The charge for lunch is $8.00 and for supper is $6.00.

Pets

Animals can be very enjoyable and calming for some residents.

Although Residents are unable to keep their own pets at St. Jude’s, family and friends are invited to bring their well-behaved pets into the facility.

Dogs should be leashed. All visiting pets should be comfortable with getting lots of attention. Many of our most popular visitors are dogs and cats.

Please speak to the recreation team or the Director of Care for more about our pet visitor policies

Visitors Per Visit

There are currently no limits to the number of visitors who come to visit at one time.

Visitors to shared rooms are asked to be mindful of the needs of roommates.

Larger parties are invited to use our basement tuck shop, conference room and chapel for larger gatherings
These spaces can be booked in advance on a first come first serve basis at reception.

If you’re bringing a meal to share, please clean up afterwards. This includes bringing the garbage home with you.

If you want beverages (tea, coffee, water), plates, cutlery, and/or table clothes etc. please speak to reception for more information. There will be a fee charged for these services
