Volunteering at St. Jude’s

Volunteers are an important part of St. Jude’s community and help enhance the quality of life for our residents.

We are always looking for volunteers to bring a variety of unique skills and knowledge to St. Jude’s. We are committed to provide information and training that meets the needs of the volunteer.

If you wish to become apart of our team volunteer with us, you are required to fill out the application form.

All potential volunteers will be contacted by phone or email, interviewed, and, if it’s a good fit for both St. Jude’s and the applicant, provided with a form to complete for a Criminal Record Check. Once cleared and screened for the best fit, they will receive a tour of the building, a general orientation, and specific training for their area of interest, skill-sharing, and/or best learning opportunity.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities at St. Jude’s Anglican Home. For example, program assistants help residents during staff-run, recreational programs such as Exercises, Baking/Cooking, Active Games, Hand Spa, Table Games/Cards, Walking Club, Gardening, Hymnsing, Church Service, Brain Gym, and seasonal special events/activities.

Many of our Residents are animal lovers. We also welcome pet visits from pet owners, who have been through a pet visitor training, and their friendly leashed animals.

A one-to-one visitor helps our residents by listening to their life story and doing activities like playing cards, reading aloud, or telling jokes. There is usually something fun and interesting for each and every person to help with.

We also encourage volunteering from newcomers needing to practice English and youth 16 and over to gain experience and references working in healthcare with older adults.

Orientation

Prior to starting your volunteer duties, you will go through a general orientation, which includes information such as wheelchair safety, communicating with the elderly and fire and emergency protocol.

After the Orientation, you will receive specific training for the volunteer job and a Volunteer Job Description for you to review as needed.

FOR EXAMPLE, AS A VOLUNTEER/PROGRAM ASSISTANT, DUTIES MAY INCLUDE

  • set-up of program area
  • escorting residents to and from the program area
    maintaining a safe environment
  • assisting residents during programs
  • socializing
  • cleaning up the program area

Recreation staff provide mentorship and guidance that you need to volunteer with comfort and ease. You will be supported by Staff and other volunteers as you learn to perfect your skills as a new St. Jude’s volunteer.

It is important that volunteers and employees work together to help create a positive attitude. This will foster a healthy, happy, home-like atmosphere for the residents. Remember a smile a day goes a long way.

WHAT TO KNOW

Volunteer Recognition

Every year St. Jude’s officially recognizes volunteers. Volunteers will be notified of recognition events.

Requests for a letter of reference will be considered and provided based on accomplishments and achievements after a minimum of 3 months volunteering.

Recreation Calendar

A calendar of events is organized on a monthly basis. Volunteers can review the calendar to see what kind of programming they would like to participate in.
